India’s patriotic songs & dances tell the story of the whole nation and it’s struggle in the past and present. Politically & socially charged dances express the intense passion for a people’s non-tolerance to social injustice and human rights abuse. These very rhythmic, passionate, pulsating dances tell the story of the people of India, Bangladesh and many other South Asian countries. They tell us about the people’s trials, tribulations and triumphs. A most intimate way to learn and experience the raw, profound emotions of the people and their stories. Dance choreographies depicting the caste system, women’s status in society, religious persecution, political persecution, affects of westernization on various cultures, anti-war isssues, human rights violations etc, are just some of the topics Amrita has passionately represented in her dance productions which are shared in this workshop. Although the issues and dance expressions in this workshop are taken from a South Asian context, the expressions and themes are universal and are applicable to any culture in the world. |
